Same goal, different surface
Both SEO and GEO want your brand to show up when a buyer is looking. SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links on a search page. GEO optimizes for being the brand an LLM names inside its answer. Same buyer intent, two different surfaces where you can win or lose the first touch.
Thinking of them as rivals is a mistake. Most buyers still use both — they search, and they ask an AI. You want to be present in each.
Where they overlap
The fundamentals overlap heavily:
- Clear, useful content that actually answers the query.
- Authority — citations, links, and reputation that signal trust.
- Structure — headings, schema, and factual claims a system can parse.
Strong SEO usually helps GEO, because the same pages an LLM prefers tend to be the ones search already rewards. Improving one often lifts the other.
Where they pull apart
The measurement is the big split. SEO gives you a position (#1–#10); GEO gives you a yes/no — was your brand cited? LLM answers also don't map 1:1 to rankings: a page at position #4 can be the one an AI quotes, and the #1 result can be ignored.
So GEO needs its own tracking. Borrowing your SEO dashboard and calling it "done" leaves the AI-answer channel unmeasured.
How to run both without doubling the work
Keep your SEO stack for rankings and analytics. Add a lightweight GEO layer — track citations across the leading LLMs on your top queries and watch the competitor gap. The two feeds inform each other: a GEO gap often points at a page your SEO already cares about.
