What AI-search visibility actually measures

AI-search visibility — often called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — is the share of times a leading LLM (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) names your brand when it answers a query in your category. Classic SEO asks "what position are we in the search results?" GEO asks a different question: "when a buyer asks an AI for a recommendation, does it mention us?"

A citation is not the same as a backlink. The model may describe your product in prose, compare you to a competitor, or list you as an option — all without a clickable link. What you want to track is whether the model surfaced you at all, and in what light.

Why it matters now

Buyers are increasingly skipping the blue links. They open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask "what's the best tool for X?" or "how should I do Y?" If the answer names a competitor and not you, you lose the first touch — before a search result page is ever seen.

This is not a future problem. LLM answers already shape consideration in software, finance, and how-to categories. Teams that measure it can act on it; teams that don't are flying blind on a channel that is already live.

What gets measured

A useful GEO signal has three parts:

  • Citation rate per query — of the runs where the engine answered your query, how many named your brand?
  • Citation rate per engine — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude do not agree; one may cite you while another ignores you.
  • Competitor gap — on each query, who else got named instead of (or alongside) you?

Together these give a directional trend: are you gaining or losing share of voice inside AI answers, and where exactly.

What it cannot do

A visibility tracker shows you the current state and the gaps. It does not control what the model decides to cite, and it cannot guarantee a citation. LLM answers also vary between runs and accounts, so counts are sampled trends, not audit-grade statistics.

Treat GEO tracking as a dashboard, not a lever. The lever is still your content, authority, and how clearly you answer each query.
